Visited many times in 2009 – Steven Sutterby

Founded by Janet Adam in 1983 the basement space was formerly a bakers. The surplus space is let out to other makers Janet Adam, Michelle Aitken, Chris Donnelly, Jana Haspicova, Lara Scobie, and Fiona Thompson. The pieces being made at the studio are both functional and design led using a range of traditional and modern techniques. If you are in Edinburgh its well worth a trip to Stockbridge to see the Adam Pottery, it’s just around the corner from the art strip on St. Stephen Street. Lots of places to go for a coffee close by its well worth a visit to see a working ceramics studio and gallery. They are a friendly bunch!

Visited on the 4th of December 2009 – Steven Sutterby

Edinburgh Printmakers is located beyond the east end of Princes Street in the Broughton area. On a cobbled street the main entrance opens into a shop and gallery space. There is a good range of prints which are diverse in there subject matter, design, colour and medium. The price of the prints would make much of the work available for smaller budgets along with the Own Art Scheme. I really liked the window from the upstairs part of the gallery that looks over the main studio hall seeing printers at work. The thing that I personally really like about the printing and the process is that it retains and adds a new element of artistic integrity that is often lost with the simplicity of digital printing. There are some interesting courses availible one of which I will be doing over a weekend next year.

Peter Potter Gallery Haddington

The Peter Potter Gallery in Haddington is set in a traditional stone building. The main entrance space is used as a reception and gallery area and has a modern twist. The main exhibition area is on the ground floor with additional exhibition space for art and crafts upstairs. There is a sweet cafe area with home made cake and coffee/tea and light lunches can be bought at out of town prices. The art and crafts on display range in price from a couple of pounds to a couple of thousand. It had a nice atmosphere and was child friendly which is a rare thing in a gallery.
