Anything visual will create a response whether it is interest or indifference, add the use of words and some level of understanding can be immediately taken from the standard systems that exist for understanding language. The use of words with imagery is not new but the use of this combination has become more sophisticated in modern day advertising and the delivery mechanisms.
Having wanted to study an Art for various reasons I settled on studying English which I struggled through the classics and the deconstruction of words, sentences and the suggested meanings between. The degree did have a creative element and I was able to write short stories and poetry which along with the ideas required various technical elements. I spent four years working, reading and thinking about words and by the time I had completed my degree in English words had become too harsh and stark a way to express creative ideas and concepts.
A period of large abstract painting evolved that were essentially a type of therapy and escapism. Signs and words in advertising have always sparked my imagination; the use of the same words in a different format/style can evoke such different responses. I purchased an old Pantry Price List from a charity shop. Using the existing format I started to play with the words considering how the greasy breakfast is part of our society.
